What is a blog?

The word blog is short for Weblog. Blogs are normally small, personal sites where one writes down his/her thoughts on a certain subject. It can be thought of as a not-so-personal online diary. Your blog can be about anything you want. Many companies use blogs to spread information on a product or service. Maybe you have a certain hobby you love, you can start up a blog about and who knows, perhaps other hobbyists will find your site and share your passion. But now that we know what a blog is, that doesn't help us much. So, let's see what goes into making one.

Blogging Basics

Before I go into how to make a blog, I will talk about what makes a blog, well...a blog. Blogs are usually very simple, you have a section for your articles and on the side you may have some other features--such as a feed, archive, etc. Take a look at a few blogs first to get the feel of it. You will notice at first glance that a blog contains a few essentials: frequent posts, comments and an RSS feed. Thankfully, Joomla! can produce articles and feeds right out of the box, you'll just have to hunt down a good commenting system (The upcoming version 1.6 of Joomla! will include a comment system). I will go into detail on each of these aspects later. First, I will go into how to set up your blog.

Building your blog

Joomla! is a great tool to use for blogs. Why? Because it has many features that other services like Wordpress and Blogger don't provide. But, it is more difficult to learn--but worth the while. For this article, I am assuming you already have a Joomla! site up and running. If not, please read the beginner's guide first.

Setting Up Sections and Categories

Every Web site needs some sort of structure. I recommend planning it out on paper first before setting it up on your Web site. Let's say your blog is going to be about stamp collecting. Your structure may look like this:

  • Types of stamps
    • Presidents
    • Flags
    • Holiday
    • Special

Make sure you have two levels of hierarchy as shown above. Joomla currently uses Sections and Categories. Think of it as a file cabinet. The file cabinet is your Website. Inside the site are "folders" or Sections. Inside the folders are sub-folders or Categories. Inside your sub-folders are your articles.

Creating Sections

Once you have your structure planned out, it's time to set it up on your site. Log into the back-end administrator and navigate to the top menu bar and hover over Content and click on Section Manager. On the upper-right hand corner, there will be various icons. Click on the one that says New. You will be brought to a new page. Fill in the appropriate fields.

  • Title

The name of your section.

  • Alias

These are used when you have the SEF option turned on. Read Enabling Search Engine Friendly (SEF) URLs for more info.

  • Published

Set to yes

The others should all be kept at the default options. Just enter your description and click Save. Your section is now created!

Creating Categories

Now go back to the top menu bar and hover over Content and click on Category Manager.

Creating a category is almost the same as creating a section. However, you will see a new option labeled Section. Your category must be assigned to a section before it can be published. Either assign the category to the section you just created or a different one. Just remember, the section must be created before you create your categories.

Once you set up all your sections and categories, you are ready to create your articles.

Creating Articles

A blog would be quite boring without any content, so let's get started.

You may be confused as to what articles may be. If you have used Blogger or Wordpress, an article can be thought of as a post. It's not really a page since you can have multiple articles in one page, and it can't be specifically called a post because that would confuse others as to what an article can do. So, just think of an article as a piece of content that can either go on a page by itself, or be displayed in a blog-type format.

To start creating articles, go to the top menu and hover over the Content link and choose Article Manager. When you enter the Article Manager page, you will see a toolbar to the top-right and the main section of the page will display created articles (if any) and what section and category they're in as well as other info. I am not going to cover all of the article manager, just enough to get you started.

Click the New link in the toolbar. You will then be brought to the article editing page. You will have a few fields that need to be filled out:

  • Title

The title of your article

  • Alias

The alias is used when SEF is turned on

  • Section

This is important. If you haven't created a section yet, the only option that should be available is Uncategorized. The uncategorized section is good for small sites with little content, but if you plan to have a full featured blog, then you'll want to go through the steps for creating sections and categories above.

Choose the section that best fits your article.

  • Category

Once you choose a section, any categories within that section will be displayed here. You must have at least one category for every section. Choose the category that best fits your article.

Now you can start typing in the content. Once that is finished, hit Save. That's it! You are done. Create any other articles you would like and then move on to Adding Menus and Links.
